Twenty beaches. One long, hot summer.

Warm lakes, soft sand and a beach at nearly every turn of Highway 97. Pick yours.

A valley of lakes, and a beach at the foot of every town

The Okanagan is a chain of lakes running a couple of hundred kilometres up the dry interior of British Columbia, and nearly every town along it is built to face the water. This guide follows them north to south, from the Shuswaps down to Osoyoos at the US border: twenty beaches in all.

Start at the top, in the Shuswaps. Sicamous has its town beach beside the Narrows, Mara Provincial Park has a day-use beach on Mara Lake to the south, and Canoe Beach at Salmon Arm is the big public sand beach on Shuswap Lake, reached from the parking lot through a tunnel under the railway.

Vernon is where the Okanagan begins. Kin Beach is the city's beach on Okanagan Lake, Kal Beach sits at the north end of Kalamalka Lake in Coldstream, and Juniper Bay is a walk in from the Twin Bays parking inside Kalamalka Lake Provincial Park. South of there, Lake Country sits between three lakes: Kaloya Regional Park at the south end of Kalamalka, Oyama's beach at the north end of Wood Lake, and Coral Beach on Okanagan Lake at Carr's Landing.

Kelowna's Hot Sands is the busy downtown beach in City Park, and across the bridge West Kelowna has Willow Beach on Gellatly Bay. Down the west shore, Peachland has Swim Bay on Beach Avenue and Antlers Beach at the south end of town, and Summerland has Sun-Oka Beach, a provincial park just off Highway 97.

Penticton has the rare luck of a lake at each end of town: Okanagan Beach along Lakeshore Drive on the big lake, Skaha Beach on the smaller, shallower lake to the south. Just up the east shore, Naramata's Manitou Park has its own beach with a swim dock. Past Okanagan Falls and the wide sand of Christie Memorial Park, the highway runs through the South Okanagan's wine country to Oliver, whose Rotary Beach is on little Tuc-el-Nuit Lake, and on to Osoyoos, where Gyro Beach sits at the foot of Main Street on what the town calls Canada's warmest freshwater lake.

A word on the water. The lakes are cold early in the season and warm by late July, and the beaches are public and busy on summer weekends, so arrive early for parking. Interior Health monitors water quality at beaches across the region through the summer; check its advisories before you swim, and in wildfire season check the smoke forecast too.
